Strong 1st showing for Track and Field
CUNY Relay Highlights
March 14, 2012 – BRENTWOOD, NY – The Suffolk County Community College track and field team opened their season Saturday, March 10, 2012 at the CUNY Community College Relays hosted by Queensborough Community College. Both the men's and women's team performances forecast a promising season, with several Suffolk athletes already surpassing the national qualifying standard marks. The women's team is off to an exceptionally strong start with all three of the women's relay teams, the 4x100, 4x400 and 4x800, hitting the national standard.
Though the meet primarily consisted of relay events Suffolk had three individual athletes secure their spot at the national meet, with several athletes grazing the marks by tenths of a second. With the first race of the day, Steve Galvao hit the standard in the 10,000m with a time of 36:19.72. In the high jump, MaryEllen Dankenbrink met the qualifying mark with her personal best of 1.37m. Asja Mayo showed an impressive performance in the shot put, throwing 10.19m and also qualifying for the national meet.
Suffolk's next meet is the Queens College Invitational on Sunday, March 25, 2012. The shot put will be contested at Farmingdale State College the day before, Saturday, March 24.
