Mitchell and Holland Leap to National Titles in Track & Field
Heptathlete Costello, Women's 4x100 and 4x400 are All-American
Suffolk returns from the NJCAA Divison III National Championship meet with two national champions, three individual All-Americans, and two All-American relay teams. Overall, the women's team placed fourth and the men's team placed seventh.
Sophomore horizontal jumpers Dannie Holland and Dominique Mitchell had an impressive showing at the National Meet. Holland won the men's triple jump and placed seventh in the men's long jump. He was also the triple jump national champion during his freshman season at the 2011 National Meet. Mitchell won the women's long jump, placed third in the women's triple jump, and was part of the All-American 4x100 meter relay team. Mitchell was an All-American in the long jump in 2012.
Kathleen Costello placed second in the women's heptathlon, earning her All-American status as a freshman. She earned her best heptathlon score of 3214 points, with a personal best in the 200 meters and the javelin throw. Costello additionally placed fourth in the women's open 100m hurdles and fifth in the women's open high jump.
The women's 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay teams each placed second, giving both relays an All-American title. The 4x100 team (Tori Thompson, Danielle Milo, Dominique Mitchell, Mackenzie Vickers) ran 50.04 in the finals, and a PR of 49.84 in the trials. The 4x400 team (Thompson, Milo, Genevieve Kuczewski, Vickers) ran a PR of 4:09.69 in the finals.
Day 1 Recap
Blake Evans placed third in the men's long jump with a collegiate best of 7.03 meters. Teammate Dannie Holland placed sixth with a jump of 6.87 meters, also a personal best.
Dominique Mitchell won the women's long jump with a jump of 5.37 meters. Freshman teammates Mackenzie Vickers placed fourth with a jump of 5.19 meters and Tori Thompson placed fifth with a jump of 5.12 meters.
Day 2 Recap
Dannie Holland won the men's triple jump on his third attempt in the finals with a jump of 14.94 meters, and freshman teammate Tylin Adams placed fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 13.95 meters. Both jumps are personal bests for Holland and Adams.
In the women's triple jump, long jump champion Dominique Mitchell took third with a jump of 10.58 meters.
Suffolk's multi-event athletes both earned their personal record. Decathlete Jeff Shuder placed third with a score of 5121 points. Shuder hit personal bests in the 100-meter dash, 400-meter dash, 110 hurdles, discus, pole vault, and javelin, and season bests in the long jump, high jump, and 1500-meter run. In the heptathlon Kathleen Costello placed second, earning her All-American status, with a score of 3214 points. Costello hit personal bests in the 200-meters and the javelin throw.
Day 3 Recap
Both women's relay teams earned All-American status, placing second on the final day of competition. The women's 4x100 meter relay ran 50.04 seconds, and the women's 4x400 meter relay ran a personal best time of 4:09.69. The men's 4x100 meter relay came in eighth place.
In the men's 400-meter dash, freshman Ibrahim Abubakar took fifth place with a time of 49.85 seconds. Sophomore Blake Evans took sixth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.38 seconds.
In the women's 200-meter dash Tori Thompson placed third with a time of 26.57 seconds and teammate Mackenzie Vickers took sixth with a time of 26.78 seconds. Thompson placed fourth in the 100-meter dash, running a 12.85, and Vickers placed sixth with a time of 13.21 seconds.
In the mid-distance events, freshman Danielle Milo ran a 2:31.58 in the 800-meter run, placing third. Milo ran a personal best time of 2:29.96 the day before in the trials.
